BIOGRAPHY

The Austrian conductor David Holzinger has established himself as a versatile conductor with a broad repertoire in both opera and symphonic music. Holzinger’s musical expertise and his ability to interpret major works with brilliance and dedication make him a sought-after conductor on international stages.

 

Since the 2022/23 season, he has been a guest conductor at the Brandenburger Theater, where he has led performances of ranging from Richard Strauss’s Elektra and Mozart's The Magic Flute, to Verdi’s Traviata. Additionally operettas such as Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, Offenbach’s Ba-Ta-Clan and Benatzky's The White Horse Inn. He is currently assisting chief conductor Andreas Spering in productions of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. In December 2024, he was invited as guest conductor with the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra in Chengdu to lead a performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

 

Holzinger stepped in at short notice for Sascha Goetzel and conducted a concert with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria, featuring members of the Vienna Philharmonic as guest soloists. Shortly before, he led a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the chorus and orchestra of the Ruse State Opera, where he had already conducted a production of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in the previous season. His commitment to contemporary music has led him to the Neue Oper Wien (P. Eötvös Angels in America) and the Junge Oper Rhein-Main (M. Eggert Caliban). He is also the founder and music director of the EXEDRA Ensemble, which he conducted at the opening festival of the Salzburg Festival 2017.

 

At the Tirol Festival in Erl, Holzinger worked over four seasons as Kapellmeister and assistant to chief conductor. There, he prepared Rossini’s Guillaume Tell, followed by further productions such as Semiramide, Ermione, and Verdi’s La Traviata. Internationally, Holzinger gained attention during a month-long tour of China with the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra. Due to the great success of the tour, he received a subsequent invitation to assist chief conductor Peter Santa, which included conducting Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde.

 

David Holzinger has been mentored by Alexander Polishchuk, Christian Kluttig and Peter Gülke. He has parcipated in numermous masterclasses including with Sir Mark Elder, Jorma Panula, Nicolás Pasquet and Mark Stringer. His collaborations extend to orchestras such as the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, Sofia Philharmonic, Brandenburger Symphoniker, Salzburg Orchestra Soloists, Rousse Philharmonic Orchestra, Filarmonia de Stat Sibiu (Romania) and Manchester Camerata.

 

Holzinger studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik "Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden with Christian Kluttig and Steffen Leißner. He made his opratic debut in Spring 2015 conducting Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. His musical journey began at the Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he studied orchestral conducting and violin under Maximilian Cencic.
